In the earlier days in India consecration of the land used to begin with tilling and sowing the land. After the crop grew high enough to sway in the wind a cowherd was left to graze on the crop. This was followed by an elaborate ritual to consecrate the land. The ritual of land cleansing is followed even today, though the tilling and sowing part is not much in vogue.

Similarly, after the completion of the building, an elaborate ceremony to consecrate the building is performed.

During the journey of a structure from being a blueprint to its final shape, the structure and the land below it undergo countless operations. The land is dug, drilled, burrowed, bulldozed, sometimes even blasted, levelled, landscaped; the structure faces hammering, cutting, welding, machining, movement of labour and machines…it is a long list. All these operations are violent in nature and generate violent energy which remains in the building. Needess to say, by the time a building is complete it turns into a repository of various types of negative and violent energies. Therefore, before the building is occupied it must be consecrated.

Space Consecration in old buildings

Once a buiklding has been occupied it begins to accumulate the emotions, sentiments and feelings of its occupants. Every single thing gets engrained in the walls, in the furniture, in the akashik element. In certain areas the accumulation is high, for example the attic, the basement, the corners, under the stairs, below the ceiling, the corridors, and all such areas which are less frequented and feel cloggy.
